Comino sits in the channel between Malta and Gozo: three residents, no cars, and the shallow strait beside it that gives the Blue Lagoon its colour. Boats leave Sliema, Bugibba and Ċirkewwa all morning. The early ones swim in an empty bay. The late ones share it with the ferries.

The harbour is better at night.
Valletta and the Three Cities face each other across the Grand Harbour, and both sides are floodlit from about an hour after sunset. Cruises run the creeks in the dark, Birgu waterfront fills once the day boats have gone, and the whole island drops several degrees.
Lunch is the long part of the day.
Ftira split and filled at a bakery counter, rabbit cooked slowly in wine and garlic, ġbejniet and a glass of something local. These walks eat their way through Valletta and stop where the queues are.
Gozo, taken the rough way.
Quads and buggies over the ridges above Xlendi, jeeps down to the salt pans at Marsalforn, the channel crossing built into the price. Bring a licence, sun cream and clothes you do not mind returning dusty.
Older than the pyramids, still standing.
Ġgantija on Gozo went up around 3600 BC, a thousand years before Giza. Mdina has been walled since the Arabs held it and still shuts to traffic. Add the catacombs under Rabat and the marble floor of St John’s in Valletta and you have the slow half of a trip here.
Every town here is a different day.
Valletta for the bastions and the museums. Sliema and St Julian’s for the boats and the late bars. Birgu for dinner on the water. Marsaxlokk on a Sunday, when the fleet is in and the market runs the length of the quay.

Nothing here is more than an hour off. Comino is twenty-five minutes out of Sliema, Gozo half an hour from Ċirkewwa, and the Blue Grotto a morning from Valletta with the Sunday market at Marsaxlokk on the way home.

Nobody sees all of Malta in a week, and nobody needs to. Take the capital, the lagoon and Gozo in that order and the rest of the trip arranges itself around them.
